Countdown to the Rivalry
Pittsburgh Panthers vs. West Virginia Mountaineers
The 2029 Pitt vs. WVU Game
The 109th meeting between Pittsburgh and West Virginia will not be held until held on Saturday, Saturday 8th, 2009 at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania due to scheduling conflicts. Afterwards, the series has been locked in from 2029-2036.
The Pittsburgh vs. West Virginia Rivalry
The Backyard Brawl is the name given to the athletic rivalry between the Pittsburgh Panthers and the West Virginia Mountaineers, with the football series dating back to October 26, 1895. This rivalry, among the oldest in college football, ran annually from 1943 to 2011. Conference realignment paused the series in 2012, halting its streak as one of the most consistent regional rivalries in the sport, though it resumed in 2022 after an 11-year break.
Initially favoring Pittsburgh locations, the game has alternated between the two campuses since 1963, reflecting their close 75-mile proximity along Interstate 79. The 1921 game marked college football’s first radio broadcast, aired by Pittsburgh’s KDKA with Harold W. Arlin calling the action, as Pitt secured a 21-13 victory.
